Waivers and Exemptions

What are Waivers and Exemptions?

• Waivers allow certain nonresident students to pay the Texas resident tuition rate.
• Exemptions are a type of financial assistance allowing some Texas residents to attend a public college or university in Texas without paying tuition or, in some cases, tuition and fees.

NOTE: Exemptions are not considered payment under state payment guidelines.  A student who does not yet have the exemption applied to their account may still be subject to cancellation if they fail to meet the state payment requirements.

Waivers

• Academic Common Market
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive notification from the UNT Graduate School Admissions Office of eligible students.
• Competitive Scholarship
  UNT Requirement: Eligibility criteria is maintained by the UNT Financial Aid and Scholarships Office.
• Economic & Development Diversification
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive certification of the eligibility of the business and a letter of intent to establish residency.
• Faculty And Their Dependents
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive the completed waiver form from the employing department.
• Mexican Citizens With Financial Need-Border Nations
  UNT Requirement: UNT International Office must receive completed application by August 1st of each academic year.
• Military Residency
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive notification from UNT Student Veterans Services Office (SAGE 236) of eligible students.
• Research Assistants And Teaching Assistants
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive notification from the UNT Graduate School Admissions Office of eligible students.
• Texas Tomorrow Fund/Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan
  UNT Requirement: Students using TTF/TGTP funds will be billed the in-state tuition rate. Student Accounting must receive a copy of Texas Tomorrow Fund/Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan card.
  

Exemptions

• Adopted Students Formerly In Foster Care
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive certificate of eligibility from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Email documentation to sfs@mail.unt.edu.
• Blind/Deaf Student
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive certification letter from Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services for the qualified student. Email documentation to sfs@mail.unt.edu.
• Children of Disabled or Deceased Firefighters & Law Enforcement Officers
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive certificate of eligibility from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. This exemption includes Peace Officers, Game Wardens and Employees of Correctional Institutions.
• Children under Conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive certificate of eligibility from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Email documentation to sfs@mail.unt.edu.
• Clinical Nurse Preceptors and their Children
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive a completed application and written proof of eligibility from the Nursing department through which the Preceptor has an agreement.
• Firefighter
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive a completed eForm (see our Forms page) and letter of eligibility from employer or volunteer fire department
• Good Neighbor Program
  UNT Requirement: Financial Aid and Scholarships Office must receive completed application and certification from native country.
• Hazlewood Act
  UNT Requirement: Student must apply and provide documentation to the Student Veteran Services Benefits Office (SAGE 236) of their eligibility.
• Hazlewood Act for Spouse/Child
  UNT Requirement: Student must apply and provide documentation to the Student Veteran Services Benefits Office (SAGE 236) of their eligibility.
• Hazlewood Legacy Act
  UNT Requirement: Student must apply and provide documentation to the Student Veteran Services Benefits Office (SAGE 236) of their eligibility.
• Highest Ranking High School Graduate
  UNT Requirement: Student must provide Student Accounting a copy of their Highest Ranking High School Graduate Certificate from an accredited Texas high school.
• Military: Children of U.S. Military who are Missing in Action or Prisoners of War (MIA/POWs)
  UNT Requirement: Student must provide documentation from the Department of Defense classifying the Service member as missing in action or a prisoner of war to the Student Veteran Services Benefits Office (SAGE 236).
• Peace Officer
  UNT Requirement: UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive a completed eForm (see our Forms page) and letter of eligibility from employer.
• Senior Citizen
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive a completed eForm (see our Forms page) and age verification from student.
• Surviving Spouse and Minor Children of Certain Deceased Public Servants
  UNT Requirement: Student Accounting must receive letter from employer of the deceased public servant certifying eligibility.
