Hazlewood Act Benefit

The Hazlewood Act is a State of Texas exemption that provides qualified veterans with up to 150 hours of tuition exemption. The Hazlewood Act hours can be transferred from a qualified veteran to their children as a legacy or dependent student. A qualified veteran’s spouse can also use Hazlewood as a dependent student. 

Eligibility Requirements

Legacy Hazlewood Student
  1. The veteran must qualify to use the Hazlewood Act for it to be transferred to a Legacy Hazlewood Student.
  2. The student must be classified by the institution as a Texas resident.
  3. The student must be the biological child, stepchild, adopted childor claimed as a tax dependent in the current or previous tax year of a qualified veteran.
  4. The student must be 25 years old or younger on the first day of the semester or term for which the exemption is claimed.
  5. The student must not have any federal veteran’s education benefits that provide 100% payment of tuition and fees, such as Chapter 33 for the term or semester enrolled. All students who have veterans who separated or retired on or after August 1, 2009, are required to submit a Chapter 33 Post 9/11 Certificate of Eligibility or denial letter in the student’s name.
  6. The student must enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its cost), unless the college’s governing board has ruled to let veterans receive the benefit while taking non-funded courses; and
  7. Meet the GPA requirement of the institution’s satisfactory academic progress policy in a degree or certificate program as determined by the institution’s financial aid policy and, as an undergraduate student, not be considered to have attempted an excessive amount of credit hours. For undergraduate students, the minimum cumulative GPA is 2.0. For graduate students, the minimum cumulative GPA is 3.0.
  8. Only one eligible person may use the Hazlewood Act per term.

Dependent Student (Child or Spouse)
  1. At the time of entry into active duty of the U.S. Armed Forces your veteran had who, DD Form 214 required,
    • Home of Record or Place of Entry is in Texas.
    • or was a Texas Resident.
  1. Your veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces or the Texas National Guard who
    • is considered to be totally and permanently disabled due solely to their service-connected disability
    • died as a result of service-related injuries, or
    • Missing in action (MIA), or
    • Killed in action (KIA).
  1. Must not have any federal veteran’s education benefits that provide 100% payment of tuition and fees, such as Chapter 33 for the term or semester enrolled. All students who have veterans who separated or retired on or after August 1st, 2009, are required to submit a Chapter 33 Post 9/11 Certificate of Eligibility or denial letter in the student’s name.
  2. The student must be classified by the institution as a Texas resident.

Veteran Student
  1. At the time of entry into active duty of the U.S. Armed Forces, DD Form 214 required,
    • Home of Record or Place of Entry is in Texas.
    • or was a Texas Resident.
  1. Must have an Honorable or General Discharge.
  2. Served at least 181 days of active-duty service, this excludes initial entry training.
  3. The veteran must currently reside in Texas.
  4. Must not have any federal veteran’s education benefits that provide 100% payment of tuition and fees, such as Chapter 33 or Chapter 31, for the term or semester enrolled.
  5. Enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its cost), unless the college’s governing board has ruled to let Veterans receive the benefit while taking non-funded courses; and
  6. Meet the GPA requirement of the institution’s satisfactory academic progress policy in a degree or certificate program as determined by the institution’s financial aid policy and, as an undergraduate student, not be considered to have attempted an excessive amount of credit hours.
