Tuition Benefit Program (TBP)

TBP is a tuition supplement for graduate students employed as a TA, TF, RA or GSA in one of the following positions:

  • Teaching Fellow (TF): Job Codes 0802, 0803
  • Teaching Assistant (TA): Job Codes 0812, 0813
  • Research Assistant (RA): Job Codes 0822, 0823, 0842, 0843
  • Graduate Services Assistant (GSA): Job Codes 0832, 0833, 0852, 0853

Types of Assistantships

  • Teaching Fellow (TF): Teaching fellows have direct student contact in a formal instructional setting and are charged with primary responsibility for teaching a course for credit under the direct supervision of a faculty member or chair, receiving regular in-service training and planned and periodic evaluations. Teaching fellows are listed as the instructor of record.
  • Teaching Assistant (TA): Teaching assistants are graduate students who do not have primary responsibility for teaching a course for credit; they perform under the instructor’s direct supervision and provide general assistance to the instructional process, such as grading, tutoring, etc. Teaching assistants may not be listed as instructor of record.
  • Research Assistant (RA): Research assistants are graduate students who are engaged in research activities under the direction and supervision of a principal investigator or faculty working on research.
  • Graduate Services Assistant (GSA): Graduate assistants are graduate students whose responsibilities may be administrative in nature or consist of other activities that do not generally fit within the TF, TA or RA job responsibilities.

Eligibility

Students who have met all TBP Eligibility Criteria and have completed the TBP Recipient Checklist are eligible to receive TBP.

Payment Timeline & Costs Covered

TBP awards will begin posting prior to the Registration Payment Deadline for eligible students who have completed the TBP Recipient Checklist.

TBP covers in-state tuition and mandatory fees (except differential tuition, the international student fee and master’s advising fee). Instructional fees, program fees and other charges are not covered by TBP. See the Explanation of Fees page for additional information.

Employment Waivers for TBP Recipients

Non-resident TBP recipients not receiving an out-of-state tuition waiver will have an Employment Waiver processed on their behalf.

How to Apply & Application Deadline

Once employed in a TBP-eligible position, students will receive a TBP agreement from their hiring department that must be completed and submitted by the following dates each term:

  • Fall – August 1
  • Spring – December 20
